Catherine's Annual Christmas Carol Concert Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will listen to a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Love and Generosity
The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Gradual Return
The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been supported by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.
"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now enrolled at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.
Generations Gathering
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.
That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to generate funds for community pantries.
Yuletide Atmosphere and Acts
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
